Do you love nature and the outdoors? Maybe you and your family would like to become more confident hiking on trails through the Salem woods? Do you think you might like to volunteer and learn more about land and habitat conservation? Are you a great party giver and fundraiser? Then Volunteer! Volunteers also have fun, like at the Halloween Treasure Hunt, in the picture above.
Land Stewardship
A land steward’s duties vary, depending upon the attributes of the property, and the benefits are many. Trail clearing is usually one of a steward’s first jobs. There is an annual inspection, or Stewardship Walk on every property when the steward walks the entire property including the boundary. Board members often accompany the steward on this walk, and together they discuss the condition of the property and future management plans. Most of the Preserves have co-stewards to share duties.
If you think stewarding the Zemko Property might interest you, or you and a friend or spouse, please contact the SLT Stewardship Committee Co-Chair at rchyinski@aol.com.
Outreach & Events Committee
The Outreach & Events Committee’s duties are, but are not limited to: tracking Memberships and donations, publicity, fund raising, mailings, planning the Annual Meeting, and scheduling Public Events and Nature Walks. Outreach & Events Committee members handle all publishing, including the Annual Brochure, event notices and the SLT web site and Facebook Page. Additionally, the Outreach & Events Committee recommends members for the ad hoc Nominating Committee to the Board of Directors.
If you would like to volunteer your time on this committee, or for a specific project, please contact Outreach & Events Committee Chair Maureen Cain at mcain@cshore.com.
Community Service Opportunities
Many schools, churches and youth groups now ask that their members perform a certain number of hours of community service each year. The Salem Land Trust has been the grateful beneficiary of this volunteer community spirit.
Please contact Maureen Cain at mcain@cshore.com if you lead a group looking for volunteer opportunities for its members.
Community service volunteers help clean-up newly purchased properties.
